The Witch of Talog

Strictly speaking, the Witch of Talog inhabits the world just outside Pembrokeshire, but she is known throughout Wales and beyond for her healing and her wisdom.

“That’s the meaning of witch,” Allison Beldon-Smith tells me in her dining room, over herbal tea and with the four dogs and one of the cats snuggling for attention. “A witch is a wise woman. It’s nothing to do with black magic.”

I tell her that a friend had asked me if I was interviewing a white witch or a devil-worshipping one.

Our witch shakes her head. “It’s not like that,” she says emphatically. “People have forgotten the old ways, the rituals of the everyday. Many people have forgotten how to live in harmony with nature, to experience the magic that is always with us. Being separated from that makes us fearful. The witch has become demonised.”

Having said that, the witch does have experience of a world that many of us are quite oblivious to.

“From earliest childhood, I was aware that there is more than one reality. From as young as three, I realised that I could see things that other people found unsettling.”

So was she an imaginative child?

“ It wasn’t imagination. I saw things that are really there, not something I made up. People talked to me. People that no one else seemed to see. I initially thought everyone had those connections, but quickly learned that not only was I alone in this but that talking about it made people angry or afraid. I learned to keep those things to myself.”

So what were those experiences?

“I saw tigers everywhere. Now I think they must have been guardians, but as no one else saw them, I kept quiet. A little woman would bring other really tiny people to me and sit on my bed and talk to me. She would ask me if I was ready, but because I thought she was asking if I was ready to die, I found that quite frightening. She would go then.”

Married at 18, motherhood to three boys occupied her life for many years, but when her husband died when she was in her mid-thirties, Allison decided that this world she had kept secret all her life should be a secret no longer. Now she began to embrace her gifts and speak openly about them.

“It wasn’t always well received. There have been situations where fear, prejudice and ignorance have made life difficult but I have been determined not to hide anymore from what I know is a reality that exists alongside the everyday experience of most people. I have been determined to be true to myself and to serve those who need help.”

Allison has always had people who have died visit her in need of help. From earliest childhood, she would have the sense of holding a bright light up for them to see the way forward. She emphasises that she never called them. They came to her.

“There are energies about us that are not human, some are not helpful to us and people should be careful. I am always disturbed when people talk about summoning. Similarly, I don’t push healing or readings to people unless they ask. I simply pass on the gifts I have been given. I wouldn’t turn anyone in need away.”

Over her lifetime, she has experienced many what some would call coincidences, where being in the right place at the right time, she has been able to offer comfort and support.

“The Goddess is like the current of the sea. She will take me to where I need to be.”

Her many experiences are fascinating and could invite scepticism, but Allison isn’t lacking in intelligence or insight. She is a scholar of the classics and has a Masters in archaeology. She doesn’t strike me as fanciful or manipulative and would certainly be insulted by suggestions that she is airy-fairy or unscientific.

She sees us all as a glowing ember that returns to life over and over again. “All that we have been over many lifetimes has been brought to what we are now. We are not confined by this one little life and we are continually learning and growing.”

So does the Witch of Talog have advice for us all?

“Most people go through their lives in survival mode. We are often running on empty. We struggle so much and we really need to take time to recharge. We need to plug into nature, to take ourselves into the silence, away from lights and concrete. Trees are wonderful and so is the sea. Just be quiet in nature and let the energies of the Earth fill you up. Trust your intuition. There doesn’t have to be a reason for everything. Just trust your intuition more and let things unfold.”

Crystal ball

Sounds like excellent advice.

The Talog Witch gave me a taster reading. I have to say, I am impressed. She was clear and insightful and what she told me was helpful.
