A series of guided walks and minibus tours has been planned between now and August, offering members of the public a rare chance to explore the dramatic coastline, wildlife and history of the restricted Ministry of Defence range at Castlemartin.

Previously tenanted farmland that was part of the extensive Cawdor Estate, the area was requisitioned by the military at the beginning of the Second World War.

The Park Authority and Ministry of Defence have worked together to improve public access and land management for conservation on the Range for more than 30 years; including offering guided walks that allow access to areas that are usually out of bounds to members of the public.

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority Ranger for the Castlemartin Range, Lynne Houlston said: “The Castlemartin Range is considered an important place for wildlife, archaeology and geology, both nationally and internationally. Having been a military range since 1939, the area has seen considerably less agriculture, access and recreation than other coastal parts of the National Park. As a result, many rare/scarce species of plants and animals can be found here, such as choughs and rock sea lavender.

“Access is granted by the MOD solely under the guidance of a walk leader from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, so this is a great opportunity to experience parts of the Park that aren’t normally accessible.”

A full day exploring the Castlemartin Range on foot costs £6 per person and is restricted to over-18s. Minibus tours of the Range for those with limited mobility are available for free. Facilities on site are limited, and dogs are not permitted.

For further details about dates, times and how to book, visit www.pembrokeshirecoast.wales/events.

The Park also offers dates for private special interest groups to access the Range. To enquire about these, contact Activities and Events Coordinator Kate Lindley on 01646 624859 or email katel@pembrokeshirecoast.org.uk.
