Nina Camplin: Art in Isolation

Cormorants

Nina Camplin is a mural artist living in South Wales. She specialises in trompe l’oeil – paintings or designs intended to create a visual illusion.

She likes to challenge perceptions of space, creating scenes of faked realities, such as windows, doors and broken walls that open up the flat surface of the wall to create an optical illusion of an additional dimension beyond.

Just my sort of thing!

Nina has worked on many public art projects nationwide, receiving commissions from various councils, including Luton, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Southampton, Isle of Wight, Dorset and Poole and has won two Design Awards for her subway murals in Luton.

Many of you will have come across her work when she was resident artist at the VC Gallery, Dimond Street, Pembroke Dock, from August 2018 until August 2019 and you might have seen the delightful paintings dotted around Pembrokeshire of dogs she has painted.

Nina says: “I started my ‘Paint Along With Nina’ page on 17 March. I was painting at home by myself at a ‘downtime’ between mural jobs when the lockdown started and put everyone else in the same situation that I was in.”

Nina had the idea to share her painting sessions as ‘Live Watch Parties’.

“I had always wanted to do some online painting tutorials but knew I would never be happy with my own filming. The current situation meant I had no time to think about it and faff about so I just got on with it and held my first one on 23 March, painting sunflowers.

“I was  running  Wednesday workshops for the VC Gallery, when I lived in Pembroke Dock,  so I offered to share my new sessions  with the gallery page. Barry John of the gallery asked if I could do some themed ones on the gallery page and I agreed.”

So now I run one from my  group every Monday at 11am https://www.facebook.com/groups/PaintAlongWithNina

And another for the VC Gallery every Wednesday at 12 noon. Here is the link for the ‘Coronavirus Collage’ https://www.facebook.com/events/220880562456608

We are planning to see more of Nina and her work here at Pembrokeshire.Online in the coming weeks, as Kitty has commissioned a portrait from Nina and thought you might be interest in seeing the process of a portrait painted in lockdown. Watch this space.

She tells us that the VC Gallery is also running writing workshops online at 11.30am on Friday mornings. Go to the VC page on Facebook to find out more.

We will be checking that out too.

Kitty is an incomer, with five summers under her belt and the knowledge that even the wettest and greyest of winters have not diminished her love of Pembrokeshire. She knows she will never live long enough to be considered a local but hopes to leave some small mark through writing about this beautiful county and its people.
