Tanyard Youth Project: Then and Now

Pembrokeshire.Online likes to keep in touch with a number of projects and charities across the county. The Tanyard is one of those that does excellent work with young people and also hosts the Bespoke group which we have written about here too.

Sue from Tanyard has kindly sent us the following information so you can all see what they would normally be doing and what excellent activities they have organised online during the lockdown.

If you know of anyone bored and in need of something to do, look no further than their Facebook page. We are also posting items from their website, with their permission. Look out for tutorials, reposted here from Jon Foreman who works for the project and who produces amazing artworks from things he finds in nature. Thank you to Sue and the Tanyard team for their sterling work.

NORMALLY AT TANYARD

Tanyard provides free and inclusive leisure activities for 250-plus children and young people aged 10-18, supporting their mental health and wellbeing by providing a safe place to go. We open six evenings weekly and run holiday activities and trips too.

We offer training in youth work, employability, enterprise skills and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and we have lots of volunteering opportunities.  At any one time we have about 10 adult and young volunteers.

The Tanyard is always busy with arts, crafts, music, sports, film, photography, drama, games, gardening and cooking, and we are running a heritage project too. Our experienced youth workers provide help and advice on a wide range of issues.

In March 2019 we launched a weekly session for young parents and we also run a weekly peer support group for disabled people. Both groups tackle social isolation to improve mental health.

NOW AT TANYARD

As a result of Covid-19, all full- and part-time members of staff are now working from home.

We are delivering evening drop-in sessions for young people via digital platforms such as Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Zoom video conferences, Kahoot online quizzes and challenges, and TikTok.

We are also providing music, photography, art, fitness and cooking tuition and activities designed by our staff and delivered via social media.

By doing this we have been able to maintain contact with, and provide support for, many children and young people who are bored and missing their friends, and very importantly, we are still here for those who need us most.

We are in touch as a team via phone and online, and staff have been amazing in how they have adapted so fast and learned new IT systems and phone apps to carry on without interruption to our service.
