Clarbeston Road Players Need You

The cast of Treasure Island

The Clarbeston Road Players came into being around 1970 and it was after watching their The Dear Departed that Bobbie Sheldrake joined. That was in 1971 and makes her the longest continuously serving member.

“Most of the members have been with the group for over 15 years now,” she explains, “putting on mostly two productions each year, at Easter and Christmas. Many of the children in the early pantos are now sending their own children.”

And that’s not all. The company has also contributed to many one-act and full-length play festivals in the county, not to forget several productions at the Theatre Gwaun.

“We have never failed to take part in Pint Sized Plays – a much-loved annual theatrical event – since it started, and have taken part in several murder mystery evenings throughout the county over the years, which have been great fun.

“Derek Webb, local author of the Agatha Crusty Murder Mysteries, wrote the first one, Agatha Crusty and the Village Hall Murders, specifically for our group. It has since  been produced all over the world.”

The Three Bears

The Players have never failed to challenge themselves, taking on work by Alan Ayckbourn, Derek Benfield, Frank Vickery, Chekov, and Terry Pratchett, and two adaptations, of ‘Allo ‘Allo! and Fawlty Towers.

Clarbeston Road Players are always on the lookout for actors of all ages and also those specifically interested in the production side, such as stage management, set construction, costume lighting and sound.

Bobbie says: “For this year’s panto, Mother Goose, we are looking for adults and children (six years minimum) to play in chorus (ensemble roles) and both male and female principal roles. If you have ever fancied being a Dame or a wicked Baron, now is your chance. Or how about a thigh-slapping principal boy (or girl) or a sweet young thing (sometimes not so young)?

The players will make you most welcome whether you have previous experience or not. Their motto is that there is something for everyone.

When the season gets underway, rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 7.30pm initially and Sundays (same time).

Children and some chorus (adults and children) start on Sunday afternoons 2-5pm and then later Tuesday early evening 6-8pm.

The Clarbeston Road Players are auditioning on Sunday 4 September:

3-5pm for six to 16 years

6-8pm for over-16s

Kitty has forgotten how long she has been here now but she loves Pembrokeshire for its beauty and it's people. She spends her time searching out stories for, swimming in the sea , drawing and painting as Snorkelfish and eating cake. She says " has been an opportunity to celebrate this beautiful county and its people. Keep the stories coming. We love to hear from you."
