Home is Where…

We have followed LILY WELLAN here at Pembrokeshire.Online for a few years now, after meeting her on a photography course. She finished her studies at Pembrokeshire College and went on to Falmouth to study for her degree. You can read all about her in previous articles and we are planning to bring her adventures up to date very soon. Meanwhile, from her travels in Australia, Lily has written this beautiful poem that we feel will speak to anyone about making home where you happen to be.

Something I wrote about missing home

 Lily Wellan

I search for it in candlelight

The gold bead reflecting off the window

I search for it in the smell of jasmine blossom blowing through the half-open window on a warm breeze

On the train, countryside and open water running past the window

In pools of sunlight on dry grass, soft blankets, green velvet sofas, messy beds and clean white sheets ballooning on the washing line

I search for it in expensive coffee, hearts in the foam

The feeling of baby-soft cat paws on my cheek

Warm hands in mine, on the back of my head, the small of my back, my waist

I search for home in empty crystal vases ready to be filled with wild flowers and tap water

In sun kissed skin, dry with salt and sun cream

I search for home in fireplaces, in coloured tiles and wooden floors worn with feet

I search for home but I realise home is exactly where I am, on the train with light flooding over the seats in a staggered dance

It’s a warm meal cooked by your friends

It’s a candlestick upright in an old gin bottle

It’s spontaneous sea swims

It’s laughing till your stomach hurts

It’s crying till you feel better, till you feel whole again

Empty but full at the same time

It’s listening to someone tell you a story, their eyes remembering the details

Soft skin

An afternoon nap

Home is to feel safe, warm, loved

But I can do that for myself now

And here I am

I am home

Kitty has forgotten how long she has been here now but she loves Pembrokeshire for its beauty and it's people. She spends her time searching out stories for pembrokeshire.online, swimming in the sea , drawing and painting as Snorkelfish and eating cake. She says "Pembrokeshire.online has been an opportunity to celebrate this beautiful county and its people. Keep the stories coming. We love to hear from you."
