‘Tis the Season to be Sneezing

So the season to be jolly is over once again and we are deeply into the season to be sneezing. If you haven’t already succumbed since winter began, or you keeping picking up those nasty little germs, some of the following might be useful.

Salt water is my “go to” when I have been in contact with sneezers and wheezers. My son tells me it’s an old wives’ tale, but this old wife says it’s worth a try and it generally seems to help me.

I am talking about a good old gargle with warm salt water. Just boil up the kettle, add some salt to the hot water and allow it to cool to a temperature that isn’t going to scald your throat. Then, my dears, just gargle. It may stop the cold you have just encountered from taking hold or it might just stop it settling on your chest. Do this two to three times a day. Worth a try.

Rest is the next thing. If you have caught the lurgy, don’t try to plough through. If you can, take some time out. Reduce any stresses that you can. It should help your body fight the bugs off and reduce the time and severity of the infection.

Drink at least six to eight cups  of fluid a day. I probably don’t need to remind you that hot lemon and honey drinks can really soothe your symptoms.

Don’t mix cold and flu remedies. Ibuprofen, paracetamol and cough medicines are all possible helpers, but check you aren’t taking double doses.

And finally, if you should fall ill, please respect other folks and do your best not to pass it on.

When I was young, it wasn’t important that you told me you were not well before visiting, but these days I really prefer people to consider others before attending social events. A sniffle to you might be a life-threatening misery for someone else.

On that note, don’t share stuff if you are ill. Always have a tissue to cough and sneeze into and dispose of it sensitively. Wash hands regularly and, boring as it may be, do your time and come back to us revitalised and glowing with health.

We wish you well, dear readers. It will be easier when spring comes.
