New Life for Crew of HMS Erebus

Research concerning crew members of HMS Erebus, which was built for the Royal Navy at Pembroke Dockyard between 1814 and 1922 and disappeared in 1845 on an Arctic expedition led by John Franklin, have revealed forensic evidence of some individuals.

Working with DNA from living relatives, some of the remains have been identified. They are cabin boy David Young, able seaman William Orren, and officer John Bridgens. There are also remains of Harry Peglar, captain of HMS Terror which sank at the same time as the Erebus.

The research has been carried out by anthropologists from the University of Waterloo in Canada and can soon be seen at an exhibition at Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre from June to October.
