I popped in to the Pembrokeshire Remakery this week at it’s new home at Unit 8 Feidr Castell Business Park, Fishguard.
For those who haven’t come across the fab little project yet ( so where have you been?), The Pembrokeshire Remakery, is the first of its kind in Wales, helping to divert household items from landfill and offering workshops, training and opportunities to share skills in repairing furniture, mechanical items and basic home electrical goods.
Nicky Middleton-Jones, who , with her partner Stephen Merrill is the brains behind the project, is an old friend to Pembrokeshire.online and was happy to show us around the new premises. “ Tell people to come and meet us. There is so much going on and it is much more than simply reusing old items that might have gone to landfill, though striving towards zero waste, is our priority. Come and see what repaired and salvaged items we have for you in our shop. All proceeds go towards teaching the local community repair skills.”
Stephen said “We already saved 7 tonnes of household items from entering the waste stream and the move to Fishguard from Haverfordwest will help us save even more by offering skills workshops. We are running training sessions, teaching people how to repair and mend, and the Remakery provides information and guidance, as well as offering the space for people to put into practice their new skills.”
Remakery are unique. As a community interest company their aim to re-educate the local community in repair and mend is working towards a zero waste living planet. They deliver free repair café events, offer upcycled focused workshops and provide an eco-reuse information and retail hub where they sell affordable quality second hand repaired and upcycled household items from wooden furniture, mechanical items and basic home electrical goods.
“Do you want something fixed rather than thrown it away ?” Steve asked. “Our regular Repair Cafes fix a range of Electrical items like toasters, kettles, and vacuum cleaners, Clothing , like jeans, bags, and shirts And general items like toys, ornaments, and small pieces of furniture. We are also keen to teach basic bike maintenance.
The Remakery run these workshops at the GATEWAY HUB, OFF CLIVE ROAD FISHGUARD, SA65 9DA. regularly. For dates and times please check out their Facebook page.
“We also have our shop at UNIT 8 ,” Nicky says, “We are urging people to make ‘second’ your first choice and combat climate change. Our items for sale here are quality second hand, repaired and upcycled goods. All items have been saved from entering the waste stream and the income raised helps support learning and repair events.”
Do you want to be part of this project and do your bit for the planet? They are a lovely friendly bunch to work with and are currently looking for volunteers to share knowledge and skills.
I asked what skills they are particularly seeking ?
“We are looking for people to get involved in all areas of running a Community Interest Company,” Nicky explained.
Do people have to have repair skills?
“ Tell people not to be put off if they don’t have repair skills. We need help running the repair cafes – hosting and serving refreshments and generally helping out at the Remakery with admin, marketing, sales and customer service.”
