Victoria Bookshop, Haverfordwest.
In recent years, many independent bookshops across the UK have closed, but the good news is that there is now a revival under way. Here in Pembrokeshire, we are lucky to still have some great independent booksellers and the easiest one to locate and visit is the Victoria Bookshop at 6 Bridge Street, Haverfordwest. Open from 9am to 5pm Mondays – Saturdays, this lovely place is a fabulous place to browse and talk to the staff, who love books and talking about them! A lively series of events are held too – regular book signings by local authors are held so keep an eye on their facebook page and twitter feed @Victoria_Books for details.
Owner Marley Davies has run the store since 1981 and is assisted by Bethan, book buyer – they aim to stock as many local works as possible and offer loyalty schemes.
This book store is also a newsagent, stationers and stocks a good range of jigsaws, games and DVDs too. I would especially recommend the sections of Pembrokeshire guide books and the excellent children’s section – a good place to go and find a book on World Book Day and for holiday reading. When I used to come to the county on family holidays our first stop on the way to the holiday house to get supplies would always include a trip to Victoria Bookshop for some essentials – notebooks, a new map, a game or some reading material!
The friendly staff are always ready to take time to help you and the shop is part of the Hive group that enables you to buy a book online , with a % going to your favourite independent bookstore and the chance to collect it from the shop too. This is a great scheme to help stores like Victoria and also avoid the monopoly of Amazon etc. if that is your ethos. Of course, you can just phone the shop to place an order too on 01437 762750.
Keep an eye on our facebook page as we are delighted to announce that we will be sharing the book reviews from Marley and his team as we love to support local writers too.
