Poetry Now – Geraldine Glover

The Client’s Plea

Don’t tell us to pull ourselves together.
Don’t ignore our pain and cross the street.
Don’t hide behind your desk.

Break out of your arrogant, ignorant tomb!

We: the weak, the sick, and the helpless,
Our names
Engraved upon Liberty’s Statue.
Aliens in a foreign land,
Motherless, rudderless,
Naked and exposed.

Alcoholic, drug-addicted, co-dependent and depressed.
Yes – that’s US.
We don’t care WHAT we take.

To achieve,
Even just for one moment,
A release
From our pain.

But You, You, YOU.
Are you not doing exactly the same?
Filling YOUR emptiness with Power,
Education, success and fame?
The first shall be last;
And the last shall be first.

You expect us to work,
In the sewers of our minds,
And to tell you what’s there.
But do you not know,
That to share what we see,
Will make it all True?

We’ve been burned and transformed,
Like the phoenix with fire,
By parents and teachers –
Our carers of course.

And where was the help,
When we needed it most?

“An absolute gentleman,”
Her sister told HER.
“You were naughty and difficult,”
My sister told ME.

It was always

And yes, we need help.
But is it safe to trust YOU?
Will you believe us?
Do you know what to do?
Are there words that can heal us?

Can you bear to sit with us,
To listen and care?

If war far away,
Was the source of our wounds,
We’d have had honours
And tributes, and warmth for our hearts.

But ‘cos it was here we were wounded,
Home where it’s ‘safe’,
We cannot find words
To tell people
What happened,
So long ago…

Yet we too were at war.
Saving our nearest,
And dearest.
Buying their lives,
With our hard-earned silence.
Turning help from us –
Away at the door.

It’s the only way out.
To surrender our needs,
To those who abuse us.
To keep us a unit,
Knit with a lie.

Don’t label us.
Don’t call us damaged or vulnerable.
We are so strong – you wouldn’t believe.

Are you sure
You can bear this?
Are you strong enough
To share our pain?
Can we trust you
Not to betray us?

Hostilities end.
I surrender.
I’ll tell you.

“Once upon a time,
In a land far away
