GREENWOOD GATE MAKING
Over four consecutive days (Thursday 4 July – Sunday 7 July) you can join Hwb Dysgu’r Tir and Coppicewood College in the beautiful ancient oak woodland of Pengelli Forest to learn the heritage craft of greenwood gate making. This is a comprehensive course that focuses on giving you the knowledge and skills to enable you to make greenwood gates of any size wherever you might need them.
As a group, we will use the theory and preparation to collaboratively make a double greenwood gate using hand tools only throughout the course, giving you chance to develop and hone your practical skills. Tutors Tracey Styles (Cornerwood) and David Hunter (The Coppice Plot) also have decades of experience and both of them separately run their own greenwood businesses.
TICKETS:
Standard – £290 For those who are meeting their everyday costs such as food and housing but have little disposal income.
Supporter – £350 For those who meet their everyday costs comfortably and have disposable income. You will be helping us to provide lower cost tickets to others who otherwise may not be able to access the event.
Please note the ticket price is for all 4 days and includes any wood and tools required
Course Content
Please note the aim of the course is to develop knowledge and skills so you can feel confident to make greenwood gates, not for every participant to make a gate during the course. Throughout the four days, a double greenwood gate will be made collectively as a group – which allows more time for theory, preparation, questions and really understanding greenwood gate making. Everyone will develop practical skills and make components in the course. The course will also give you the basics of greenworking for you to apply to other greenwood projects.
REQUIREMENTS
The course is suitable for both beginners and those with experience in green woodworking.
All participants are recommended to have steel toe caps or at the very least sturdy shoes. You will need to bring all food, water and hot drinks for the day as the college is off grid in the woods. Please wear suitable clothing for the weather as some activities will be outside and not your best clothes as they might get dirty/marked/damaged when moving wood and using tools. You may want to bring a notebook and pen to take notes.
Unfortunately there is no wheelchair access to Coppicewood College due to the lack of road access to the workshop and you’ll need to be able to walk approximately five minutes from the road to the college.
If you are travelling from outside the area and need help finding somewhere to stay overnight, email us to request advice and suggestions – hwb@cwmarian.org.uk.
