The Unwinding
Beckons you gently
Into in between time
A meditative celloscape
Calling to the liminal space
Of dreams
Where words, images and cello play
This was spoken word accompanied by cello, performed by author and illustrator Jackie Morris and cellist Nia Harries.
The recent premiere of The Unwinding at Theatr Gwaun fulfilled an ambition of Jackie Morris and Nia Harris. They brought Jackie’s illustrations to life through the big screen, displayed a nomadic caravan, and traversed vast snowscapes encountering mystical creatures along the way. This was accompanied by the original score composed by Nia for the cello, the musical story unfolding as she played.

The evocative cello evoked created an immersive atmosphere, bringing the landscapes and characters in Jackie’s story to life. As Jackie told the story, the pages folded on the screen, all while Nia was unwinding her own story with her fingers adding a mesmerising dimension.
The performance came about through a collaboration between the artists, Fishguard is Lit and Theatr Gwaun. And the evening was supported by the Night Out scheme. It was a quality arts and music event which attracted a big audience for a bleak winter evening.

Both Nia and Jackie were thrilled to be able to share their work in the theatre, and the audience enjoyed Jackie’s distinctive voice and the sound of the cello weaving its magic.
This was not the first time Theatr Gwaun had seen these two creatives – and it will not be the last. Look out for more of this wonderful collaboration in 2026.
