Rare Shark Spotted in Pembrokeshire Waters

Two sightings of a rare breed of shark have been reported off the Pembrokeshire coast. Reports of a thresher shark came from the National Whale and Dolphin Watch – which ran from 26 July to 4 August.

It’s been an interesting past few years, with recent visits from  a walrus, a giant  leatherback turtle, and a humpback whale, not to mention an increase of dolphins in the waters off our coast, but  this is an uncommon sighting of a breed of shark that rarely leaves deep ocean for coastal waters.

This species, with its distinctive torpedo shape, is migratory and known to pass through UK waters each summer, but is rarely seen off the Pembrokeshire coast.

It’s a big creature, capable of growing up to six metres in length, and can live for up to 50 years.

The sightings were reported in St Brides Bay and from Grassholm Island.
