Watch Out for Toads

The toads are on the move again, this being the time when they migrate en masse. They have been waiting for the first warmish and damp night, and in Pembrokeshire, their route to the breeding ponds is across the A487, close to the Bug Farm on the outskirts of St Davids..

Toads follow the same migration route from where they hibernate to their ancestral ponds, regardless of what might be in the way, and they need a bit of help and a lot of vigilance if they are not going to become squished on their journey.

A toad crossing was set up on the A487 when the Bug Farm first noticed them but signs were stolen as soon as they were put up.

Last year volunteers were recruited to support the creatures on their journey. The volunteers have reported that in one night alone two of them rescued more than 50.

The so-called common toad is not so common these days with nearly 70 per cent decline in numbers noted over the past 30 years, and it is estimated that as many as more than 100,000 have been saved by volunteers in the UK in one year alone.

Drivers are being urged to slow down in the area of the A487 and to look out for toads – which can sometimes look like a dead leaf.
