Heather Bennett Says: This World is Keeping Me Awake at Night
Local artist and photographer HEATHER BENNETT, like many of us, wonders what we can do to make a positive change in the world and she has written this article for us.

After another night with hardly any sleep, I came to the conclusion I had better list what I am worrying about. It seems like there is nothing much I can do about any of it, but if we all think that, what will happen? I may be called a conspiracy theorist or told that I am ill informed but here is what I think:
• I can no longer trust the media. Reporting is not unbiased and does not address both sides of any issues and so it is difficult to assess what is real.
• I can get no real news of what is happening in Russia because a lot of its media is blocked in the West.
• Both Trump and Obama have talked openly about running for a third term in office, setting aside the American constitution. They and the EU seems to change things to suit themselves so there is no bedrock to rely on.
• America has been killing people in boats off the coast of Venezuela claiming they are drug running and ruining American people. Proof please.
• Drugs are a major problem in the US – but it needs to be tackled at home. People are depressed and have no hope for the future so they seek comfort and escape into drugs or alcohol,
• America intends to get regime change in Venezuela. But is what is going on there actually about oil?
• There is a frighteningly wide gap between those who have and those who have not and it is particularly obvious in the US.
• Trump claims to have settled eight wars. Cambodia and Thailand are now attacking one another again. Israel having got their hostages back is openly attacking Palestine.
• Both America and Russia say that the European Union is outmoded and finished.
• The EU is in dire straits financially and yet the latest plan is to force member states to take out loans to cover monies to be sent to Ukraine and pay back previous loans already in place.
• Because there is no accurate reporting of the Ukraine war from either side we do not know the true state of affairs, but it looks as though the Russians are taking more and
more of Ukraine on an almost daily basis. It is hard to confirm this.

• Large numbers of Ukrainians and Russians have been killed. What are we doing letting all these young people be wasted? After both world wars we had all lost millions, the Russians included, and yet we have not learnt.

• The UK is pumping money into Ukraine and yet our own country is crumbling. What about the NHS, social services, the homeless, lack of housing, local councils who are going bust…?
• There have been proven allegations of corruption in Ukraine, yet we still send money there.
• It looks as though Starmer is aligning himself more and more with Europe – yet the British people voted to leave the union. Is that vote to be ignored?
• Starmer, Mertz and Macron have formed a separate union with Zelensky and are supporting him to continue the war which looks as though it has been lost.
• The UK is no longer a world power and needs to look at why it thinks it is.
• Very few people seem to be aware of what the root causes of the war are and are therefore not listening to what the Russians are saying. They have their own agenda and it is one of defeating Russia. No, I am not pro-Russia – I am anti-war.
• I feel sorry for Zelensky. He’s been used and manipulated by America and Europe and continues to have to rely on them for help. He looks dreadful and is actually fighting for his life.

• The UK has big problems at home – freedom of speech is being eroded with laws against words or marches being “a threat to national security” put in place to shut people up.
• We are being asked to have digital identity – which erodes even further our ability to travel freely or make business decision or even legally exist. Very 1984.
• The use of cash is being eroded by our banking system which, by moving away from the high streets, is implementing a cashless society. Credit cards are fine but they make it far easier for people to run into debt. Freedom to spend where and how we chose is being eroded.
• Big tech isn’t helping as it has its own agenda and drive towards power and wealth.
• Most importantly, nothing is being done about the climate problem with America refusing to believe it is happening. Open your eyes, world… look at the weather changes and temperatures and loss of species from the natural world.
So all of this and more is going on in my head – no wonder I can’t sleep. I do want to be able to know the truth about what is happening in our world, but in the dark hours of the night I despair about it all. I can go on at grass roots trying to make a daily difference but somehow we need a different form of politics and more world unity. It is time for that. How do we do it?
