Claims of a Boost for Low-Carbon Energy

A battery energy storage system (BESS) has been approved near Pembroke Power Station and is seen as a significant step towards enhancing low-carbon energy solutions in South Wales.
This new installation will include 212 battery units connected to the National Grid.
The systems works by using various types of batteries to store energy generated from renewable sources, such as solar or wind. When excess energy is produced, this is channelled into the batteries for storage. During periods of high demand or low generation, the stored energy can be released back into the grid and is claimed to be very reliable.
The aim is to boost energy storage capacity and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Once the system is up and running, RWE, the UK’s largest power generator, which owns the land, say that the Pembroke battery would be capable of storing enough electricity to meet the average daily domestic energy needs of more than 72,000 typical homes.
It is claimed that BESS will ensure several environmental benefits, including: enhancing renewable energy integration by storing excess energy generated during peak production times; there is also expected to be a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, allowing for a smoother transition away from fossil fuels, improving grid reliability and stability, and minimising energy waste by enabling more efficient energy distribution.
Concerns have been raised about how the new installation will look and these concerns are being taken into account by RWE. It says it has undertaken a range of environmental and technical assessments to determine the effect of the development on the local community and environment.
