Artist Liz Tobin Explores Impermanence

Liz says: “For my present exhibition, Ephemorality, at Haverhub in Haverfordwest, I have selected a range of paintings from urban realism to more semi-abstract works, in oil, acrylic, watercolours and digital print.

“I get my inspiration from the world around me and am attracted by the ephemeralness of art in that we try to capture something, maybe the essence of what we see, as well as the contradiction that in some ways it is a more permanent rendering of that moment.

“I started my journey In Pembrokeshire at Lifelong Leisure and Learning where, under inspired tuition, I learned about many different artistic media. I then attended an Access course in Carmarthen where, because of restrictions of lockdowns, I mostly developed the digital side of my work as well as ceramics.

“My paintings have a three-dimensional aspect to them as I tend to lay the paint on thickly, impasto, but have learned to thin this out a bit in my later works. I like the idea that the eye can finish the painting for itself, and three of my later paintings, Nature Puts on a Show I, II and III are left more to the imagination.

“I had my first exhibition at the VC Gallery in Haverfordwest and then moved on Oriel Y Parc at St Davids, the Torch, Milford Haven, and the Oriel Q, Narberth, where I am a committee member of a volunteer-led, not-for-profit gallery. I also have work in Tenby Museum and Art Gallery.

“I hope you enjoy my exhibition as much as I have enjoyed preparing it.”
