Councillors to be Lobbied on Climate Policy

In just a few days, more than 700 people have signed a petition – organised by the West Wales Climate Coalition – asking Pembrokeshire County Council not to renege on its commitment to tackle climate change.

The council will discuss its net zero policy this coming Thursday 9 October.

A local spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion (XR) said: “We’re encouraging people to contact their local councillor before Thursday, to ask them for their views and to encourage them to turn up to the meeting. We hope all the councillors will be there.

“We’ll have a quiet and respectful presence outside the council offices from 9am to greet the councillors as they enter the building.
“The science of the climate crisis is clear and, as with covid, we need to follow the science. We know that budgetary restrictions on the council are also real, but ditching the net zero policy would be disastrous for the people of Pembrokeshire. It will just take a bit of political will, which we hope the councillors will embrace.”

    Pembs may be small potatoes globally but surely it’s short-sighted to stop supporting a policy that is not only cutting the council’s energy emissions but surging economically? I hear the worries about housing and health care but there’s no causal link between greening and greater poverty. It’s government-imposed austerity and inequality that are causing poverty.
